Barnard N. Madsen received his Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Brigham Young University in 1982. In 1985, he graduated from J. Reuben Clark Law School, where he served as an editor for the Journal of Legal Studies. Mr. Madsen spent the first eleven years of his legal career as an Air Force judge advocate (JAG), serving as a prosecutor, defense counsel, and appellate counsel, and as an advisor on employment law issues. He also served as chief investigator of medical claims at the Air Force’s largest medical center, and as a Special Assistant United States Attorney. He was also specially selected to serve as an investigator in the Program Integrity Division of the Department of Defense Inspector General’s Office. In that capacity, Mr. Madsen investigated general officers and general officer-equivalent civilians, including a high-visibility and sensitive investigation of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe. Mr. Madsen left active duty in 1996 to accept an offer to serve as an Assistant Attorney General in the appeals division at the Utah Attorney General’s office where he argued on behalf of the state before the Utah Court of Appeals and the Utah Supreme Court. In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Madsen also enjoys particular expertise in trademark law, intellectual property law, employment law, and medical malpractice matters. He is a member of the International Trademark Association (INTA), and is a master of the bench in the A. Sherman Christensen American Inn of Court I. He retired in 2007 as a Lieutenant Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserves.
